Our teachers and learning support assistants are always carefully assessing what children can do and understand in order to carefully plan next steps in their learning. This is an ongoing process, but there are also some key points of statutory assessment in school. These are specific points where assessment information is gathered and submitted to the Local Authority and Department for Education to confirm the attainment of each child in school.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In the first few weeks of Reception, children take a Baseline assessment, which is carried our by their teacher. There is also a statutory assessment at the end of the children's Reception year against the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile statements. Children are expected to achieve a good level of development and we use Development Matters to support our assessments of the children.

Key Stage One

At the end of Year 1, there is one statutory assessment:

• The Phonics Screening (also taken by Year 2 if applicable)

At the end of Key Stage 1 non-statutory assessments are administered in:

• Reading
• Writing
• Maths

We hold Tea and Talk parent workshops to share information about these. 

Year 4 Times Table Check  

This is statutory across the country and takes place in June.  All Year 4 children will answer times tables questions on a computer in a similar format to Times Table Rockstars. It is very quick and very straightforward if you know your times tables up to 12 x 12.  The children will be given 25 questions from all times tables up to 12 x 12 given in any order.

For your child to be successful and enjoy the experience, they will need to know all of their times tables before the end of this year. Practising these can be fun!

Key Stage 2

At the end of Key Stage 2, in Year 6, statutory assessments are administered in:

• Reading
• Writing
• Maths
• Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

We hold Tea and Talk parent workshops to share information about the Standard Assessment Tests at the end of Key Stage 2.
